And This is When Me and My Mom Got Sloshed

There's no food involved in this one.

When me and my mom get sloshed, we like to take dumb pictures of ourselves.

Actually , I take them. But she supplies some of the funny faces.
Or the looks of confusion.

Sometimes we manage to smile and look normal.

But usually not.

She said she wasn't sure who Bret Michaels was.

Love that lady...

Ok, back to SF!

The Holy Grail

The best damn sno-ball stand in the world

No one on the west coast even UNDERSTANDS what my favorite sno-ball flavor is. Egg custard by the way. Ugh!! I can't tell you how much I was looking forward to this sno-ball. And this is what I saw as I drove there...

Shit

Maybe it was the rain, or that it was nine at night, or that it was still before Memorial Day. Whatever the reason, I didn't get my sno-ball. And it haunts me.

This is the flavor I WOULD'VE had. Boo!

As God, and all the is holy above, as my witness, I WILL have an Egg Custard snowball again!

Crab with a Side of Crab

Everyone that I know in Maryland has their own special recipe for Crab Dip. It usually starts with cream cheese, maybe sour cream, maybe mayonnaise, Old Bay, salt & pepper, butter, cheddar cheese, crab meat, green onion, bread crumbs, probably garlic, Worcestershire sauce, lemon juice, possibly hot sauce. Some people like to get fancy and add in diced ham and peppers as well as other cheeses, like pepper jack or parmesan. Anyway, it's all stirred up, topped with more cheese and then baked in the oven and finally served with crackers or crusty bread.

My sister makes the best crab dip in the universe but she punked out on me on this trip and tried to pass off some new dip called 'Pizza Dip' which had no crab in it and instead diced pepperoni?!? Ok, whatever.

When I went out to my steamed crab dinner, we decided to start with a crab dip appetizer. Thank God. It was terrific. I am a huge fan of cheese, especially melted, so I could always use more cheese, but it was a tasty app nonetheless.

But the BEST part of the meal, and my entire trip, by far, was the Hot Steamed Crabs. I haven't had them in a couple of years and I had forgotten how delicious they are. They are actually hot to the touch and COVERED in Old Bay. (It's practically like salt and pepper in Baltimore.)

After cracking open one crab, I was an absolute mess, crab mustard in my hair, something spicey in my eye. But it was so worth it. And it explains why even the fanciest restaurant lays newspaper down on their tables. After a while, the table was decimated and crab carnage was everywhere. All the tummies at my table were full.

A good night was had by all, except for the two dozen crabs.

Maryland Crab Soup

There's are two kinds of crab soup in Maryland. There might be other kinds in other places but it really doesn't mean anything because there are only two kinds in Maryland. There is Cream of Crab which, as indicated by the name, is a heavy cream based soup. And then there's Maryland Crab Soup which is pictured above. It's a lighter tomato based, veggie broth deal. Seasoned with Old Bay and full of vegetables and chunks of backfin crab meat. And if you're lucky, NO SHELLS!!!!

And I think we've already reviewed...ME + SHELLS = GAG CITY. I don't remember being this much of a baby over shells but, what can I say? I guess I'm a diva now. At least about crab shells.

This soup was really tasty. But a little light in the crabmeat. I actually kind of noticed that through the whole trip. I guess crab has gotten ridiculously expensive. Oh well. Still a good cup of soup!

Wholesome Family Dinner

Do you remember the time that I told you that I had never really had authentic Mexican food until I moved to California? And that I thought Mexican food was Taco Bell and Chili's? Well, here you go...

How are ranch dressing and onion straws Tex-Mex?

Heavy, heavy, heavy. Somehow, I thought that if I order sliders instead of a burger, it wouldn't be so bad. Portion control. I don't know. But first, let me dip my slider in the chili queso...

Crabcakes, A New Old Love

Hey Hon,**
If you know ANYTHING at all about Baltmore, you know that the #1 food, BY FAR, is crab. And when I say crab I am referring only to the famous Maryland Blue Crab. (I am NEVER EVER referring to Dungeness Crab that is found on the West Coast. Ugh.)

Yes

No!!

One of the most popular ways to eat crab is in the form of the crabcake. My big confession is that I am not a fan of the crabcake. There are occasional crab shells found in a crabcake and I just found it too stressful to eat one. If there is a tiny piece of shell in a batch, it ALWAYS ends up in my crabcake. (I know, life is hard. Sorry I had to find out this way.)

In any case, I can't honestly say that crabcakes are my favorite food but on this trip, I was ready to give them another shot. So I ordered a crabcake sandwich, broiled. It was served on a fresh roll with lettuce and tomato and a side of homemade potato chips. There was also a small portion of what I thought was potato salad but, after a hefty forkful, was discovered to be tartar sauce.

The crabcake was mostly backfin crab meat and not a lot of bread filler. Seasoned and broiled perfectly. Better than how I remembered them as a kid. The chips were good too, but then again, I don't think I've ever had bad potato chips.

It was the kickoff meal for me and really set the tone for my whole trip. It made me miss Baltimore more than I have in a long time. And if you can believe it, there wasn't a single shell!

Welcome back, Rebecca!

My Mom's Fave

I don't remember Rita's being that popular when I lived in Baltimore but I guess I've been gone a while now. So when I begged my mom to take my to the snowball stand, she insisted that I have Rita's. I'd like to think it was because she thought I needed to try a new culinary experience representative of the current foodie scene in Baltimore, but when I begged for a snowball, she said 'Put on your big-girl-panties and try the damn custard' so I figured out that it was just her favorite place to go. She also promised that if I quit whining, she'd take me for a snowball later. Hurray!

I chose the chocolate/vanilla swirl, not the non-fat option. You can also get fruit slushie flavors with a swirl of the custard in it. I don't know, is that weird? I just stuck with the custard because I knew that I was going to get the snowball later.

Anyway, it was great frozen custard. Cool and creamy. It didn't feel too fatty, kinda light. If I lived there, I would probably go back. Yum!

Happy Mothers' Day!

Love,
Rebecca
